This agreement was reached after Huang promised to invest in new AI data centers in the U.S. The H20 chips, which are less powerful than other Nvidia chips, were feared to be headed for restrictions due to their use by China-based DeepSeek. Despite bipartisan calls for restrictions on the H20, Trump allegedly agreed to allow their export in exchange for Nvidia's commitment to U.S. AI infrastructure. This decision seems to counter the administration's goal of securing U.S. dominance in AI, especially since the Trump administration kept in place AI chip export rules introduced by outgoing President Joe Biden. Nvidia criticized these guidelines as 'unprecedented and misguided,' arguing they would stifle global innovation. Other AI companies like OpenAI and Microsoft have also made significant investments in U.S. AI infrastructure to align with Trump's 'America-first' approach. Trump has previously pressured companies like TSMC to build new chip factories in the U.S.
