Nusano Kembangkan Teknologi Produksi Bahan Bakar Nuklir Efisien Untuk Masa Depan Energi Bersih

Pomodo.id - The latest advancements in nuclear fuel production are spotlighting Nusano, a company from Utah, which has been chosen for a United States Department of Energy initiative aimed at developing an innovative system to produce high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). This system is set to manufacture approximately 5.9 ton per year of HALEU from a compact 1,200-square-foot production unit. Utilizing a new method that incorporates metallic uranium rather than the conventional fluorinated uranium gas enables a more streamlined enrichment process, producing fuel in metallic form and in a single pass. This approach not only simplifies the production process but positions HALEU as a pivotal component in the future of nuclear energy, especially within advanced reactor designs. HALEU, which contains between 5 hingga 20 persen uranium-235, allows reactors to function optimally with less fuel, consequently increasing their operational duration between refueling. As the demand for HALEU rises—projected to hit around 50 ton annually by 2035—the need for local production solutions has become increasingly critical, as current U.S. production is still under 1 ton per year. However, challenges persist in bridging this gap between potential demand and actual production capabilities. Despite the innovative methods Nusano is exploring, there might be uncertainties concerning the scalability and commercial viability of their production units once they come online in 2031. The complexity and investment required to establish a robust domestic supply chain for HALEU in the United States poses significant hurdles. The advancements made by Nusano could have substantial implications for the young Indonesian workforce in the context of the global nuclear energy landscape. As the world shifts towards cleaner energy sources, there is an emerging demand for skilled professionals in nuclear technology. With Indonesia's energy transition and potential interest in developing its own nuclear capabilities in alignment with sustainability goals, young Indonesians equipped with skills in nuclear engineering, advanced materials science, and related fields could find increasing opportunities. The local industry’s need for expertise in engineering and technology may present pathways for promising careers. As momentum builds toward nuclear energy, the development of HALEU production technologies emphasizes the dual potential for enhanced energy security and environmental sustainability. For Indonesia, aligning educational programs with this evolving sector could empower the upcoming generation to contribute meaningfully to global energy advancements. Whether it’s through formal education paths in technology or emerging sectors within the energy economy, the steps taken now will undoubtedly influence their future roles in driving clean, efficient energy solutions both at home and abroad.--- Diterbitkan oleh Pomodo · Redaksi Pomodo Terbit: 15 Sep 2026, 05.06 WIB Ditulis dengan bantuan AI dan diperiksa akurasinya terhadap sumber.
